Mission

To better inform all actors in the Municipal Solid Waste Stream system with quantifiable data and promote actionable solutions to reduce waste.

Goals

To help individuals/communities:

  • 📊 reach a 85% waste diversion rate or more
  • 🚮reduce the average per person disposal rate of 1,704 lbs. per year (in the United States) by 66% or more

Why? ¯\(ツ)

Simply put, we generate way too much waste here in the United States 🤧. According to the EPA, 267.8 million tons of trash were generated. This is significant because even though the US represents 4% of the global population, we generate 12% of global municipal solid waste, right behind India and China as the top countries who generate the most waste ( Verisk Maplecroft, 2019). Large quantities of trash also presents other harmful environmental impacts. Landfills in the US represent the nation’s 3rd largest source of human-related methane emissions 😬 (EPA). In addition, waste that is mismanaged affects 43% of marine mammals 😢 (EPA 2017).

To help tackle this growing problem waste monitoring systems already exist in commercial settings (eg. Bigbelly, Compology), but ZotBins expands waste monitoring to the individual and community level. In addition, ZotBins is completely opensource and built for people, by people.

How it Started

This project started at UCI in 2017 with a group of 4 undergraduates for a hackathon hosted by UCI TIPPERS. The aim of the project was to help create a tool to help with UCI’s zero waste initiatives. With the guidance of professors and graduate students from the TIPPERS research group, the team was able to grow from 4 to over 15 individuals all working on the ZotBins project. Together they have been able to build and deploy a network of 9 smart bins on campus that are currently making a positive impact for UCI. Since then, the project is being shared to the open-source community through ZBCE and the ZotBins UCI undergraduate team continues with new members every year.
